Her grandfather also founded Emmanuel, a prominent church near Minneapolis. Michelle’s father subsequently followed in his footsteps and became a pastor of Emmanuel Church.

His ancestors include Italian Catholics and German Mennonites, including one named Henry Brown who served as the Anabaptist Mennonite movement’s first missionary to China in 1909.
